Teacher Resume Examples and Free Template
A teacher resume has two readers before a principal ever sees it: the software that parses it into a database, and the recruiter who skims the parsed result. This page gives you two complete resumes that pass both, one for an experienced teacher and one for a new teacher with only a practice year, plus a free .docx that opens straight into Word or Google Docs. No signup, no email wall.
Two names for one document. In the United States you write a resume, usually one or two pages. In Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, India and the UK you write a CV, which can run a little longer and follows local rules on referees and personal details. The examples below work as either; the country notes near the end tell you what to change.
Pass the applicant tracking system first
Many school districts and large private groups run applications through software (Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS) that reads your file into fields before a human opens it. That parser scrambles anything fancy. Keep the page single-column, head the sections the way the software expects them (Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certification), and send Word format or a PDF you can select text in. Tables, text boxes, second columns, and a photo pasted into the header are what come out garbled; the general resume format guide goes through the rest. The teacher-specific point is your licence number: put it in an ordinary text line, because a district checks it before anything else and a graphic header hides it from the parse.
The sections, in order
Teacher resumes run reverse-chronological: most recent first. Put your teaching licence or certification high on the page, because a school checks it before anything else. A short professional summary at the top tells the reader who you are in two lines. Then your experience with results, your education, your skills, and your referees (how you list those depends on the country).
Turn duties into results
"Responsible for teaching English" tells a principal nothing; every applicant taught their subject. "Raised the class reading average a full grade level in two years" tells them what you can do for their school. Start each bullet with the action and end it with the effect, and attach a number wherever you honestly can: a class size, a result, a programme you ran. If you are new and have no classroom numbers yet, use what your practice year produced.
Example 1: experienced teacher
Grace has six years in upper-primary classrooms. The summary states the result up front; the experience section proves it with one number and the method behind it. This is the same resume that is inside the .docx above.

Example 2: teacher with no experience
If you are applying for your first teaching job, your teaching practice year is your experience. Skills and certification schools look for now
List the licence or certification a school is legally required to check, and put it where they can find it fast. Beyond that, name the skills that show you can run a real classroom in 2026: differentiated instruction, classroom management, formative assessment, and the tools you actually use, such as Google Classroom. Programmes you started outside lessons, an after-school reading club, a science fair, a tutoring group, tell a principal you do more than the minimum.
Country notes: what to change and where
- United States and United Kingdom. No photo, no date of birth, no marital status. Employers may not ask, and adding them looks dated. Hold it to one page until you have taught in more than one school.
- Kenya. A CV here usually includes your national ID number and two or three referees: one or two professional (a head teacher or immediate supervisor) and one personal who can speak to your character. Keep it to two pages. "Referees available on request" is fine if you would rather share them later.
- Nigeria. Registration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) is a legal requirement to teach in registered schools, and recruiters check it before shortlisting. Put your TRCN number next to your title or in your certification section. If it is still in progress, say so, as in Example 2.
- Gulf states. A photo, date of birth, and nationality are commonly expected here, the opposite of the US and UK rule. Match the norm of the country you are applying in.
Send it with a matching letter
A resume lists what you have done; the letter argues why it fits this school. Send the two together and make them tell one story. Our teacher application letter examples pair with the resumes here: the same Grace and Joy, the same results, written up as a one-page letter with a free .docx. If you are writing your very first resume for any role, the first resume guide and the general resume format cover the basics this page builds on.
Frequently asked questions
Which resume format do schools prefer?
Reverse-chronological and single-column, with your licence or certification visible near the top where a school looks for it. Send Word format, or a PDF you can select text in, so the district software can read the file. Tables, columns, and a header photo are what break that read.
How do I write a teacher resume with no experience?
Use your teaching practice or student teaching year as your experience block. Name the classes you taught, one thing you introduced, and a result your supervisor recorded, then add your certification and service. Example 2 above does exactly this.
How long should a teacher resume be?
One page for a newly qualified teacher, two once you have taught in more than one school. A Kenyan or Nigerian teaching CV commonly runs to two pages because the referees section sits on the document itself.
Should I put a photo on my teacher resume?
It depends on the country. Leave it off for the US and UK, where employers may not ask. Gulf employers often expect one. Match the norm where you are applying, not a single template.
What skills should a teacher put on a resume?
Classroom management, differentiated instruction, formative assessment, lesson planning, and the tools you use such as Google Classroom, plus your subject and grade level. List the licence or certification the school must check, high on the page.
