Electrical Engineer CV: Example, Template, and Skills

An electrical engineering CV is read for two things a general resume guide never mentions: whether you are registered, and whether your projects show competence at the level the role needs. Everything else, the layout, the summary, the skills line, is the same work every candidate does. These two are where engineering CVs are won and lost.

Registration goes near the top

In most markets a recruiter checks your registration status before reading anything else, because it decides which roles you are eligible for at all.

  • Nigeria. COREN registration is legally required to practise independently and is a prerequisite for senior roles at most multinationals and government agencies. Registration as an engineer generally needs about four years of professional experience and a pass in the prescribed engineering practice examination, supported by a CV in COREN's format and a technical report describing your projects and your personal contribution to each. If you are not yet registered, say where you are in the process: "COREN registration in progress, professional practice examination scheduled" tells a recruiter more than silence.
  • Kenya. The Engineers Board of Kenya route runs from graduate engineer to Professional Engineer after a minimum of three years working under a registered professional engineer. State your current class and the year, along with your supervising engineer's registration where a form asks for it.
  • United States. The PE licence is state-issued and matters most for consulting, public works, and any role where drawings are sealed. Say which state and the licence number where you hold one.
  • United Kingdom. Chartered status through an institution such as the IET is the equivalent signal, and incorporated status sits below it. Name the institution and the grade.

Put this in the header block or in a Certification section directly beneath your summary. Burying it under education, where most people leave it, means the reader has to hunt for the one thing they came to check.

Write projects, not duties

What separates an engineering CV that reaches a shortlist from one that stalls is whether a technical reader can size the work. "Responsible for maintenance of electrical systems" could describe a technician in a small office or the person who runs a substation. Give each significant project four things:

  • Scope. The plant, voltage level, capacity, or size of the installation. "11 kV switchgear across three substations" tells an engineer everything the phrase "electrical infrastructure" hides.
  • Your role. What you personally did: designed, specified, commissioned, supervised, tested, or signed off. Registration bodies ask for exactly this distinction, and so do hiring managers.
  • Standards and tools. The code you worked to and the software you used, because it says which world you have been operating in.
  • Outcome, with a number. Downtime avoided, load supported, cost saved, energy reduced, schedule met.

Three to five project entries, most recent first, do more than a decade of job descriptions. For the phrasing itself, the resume writing techniques guide covers verbs and quantifying.

The technical skills section

List skills the way an engineer would ask about them, grouped rather than heaped:

  • Systems and equipment. Switchgear, transformers, protection relays, motor control centres, generators, UPS, solar PV, and the voltage levels you have worked at.
  • Standards and codes. IEC, IEEE, NEC or BS 7671, and whichever national wiring regulations apply where you work.
  • Software. AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, DIgSILENT, EPLAN, MATLAB, PLC and SCADA platforms by name and version family.
  • Testing and commissioning. Insulation resistance, earth fault loop, relay testing, and the instruments you use.
  • Safety. Permit-to-work systems, lockout and tagout, arc flash, and any certification such as NEBOSH.

Skip the soft-skill inventory. "Team player, hardworking, fast learner" is the filler every CV carries and no engineering manager reads.

Formatting and country rules

Keep it two pages at most for a job CV, single column, and let the projects take the space. Whether to include a photo, date of birth, or named referees depends on the market: the CV guide has the country-by-country table, and the resume format guide covers the layout and applicant tracking rules that apply here as much as anywhere.

One engineering-specific note: a CV prepared for a registration body is a different document from a job CV. Registration submissions ask for a fuller technical report and a project list in their own format, so keep that version separately rather than trying to make one file do both.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put COREN or EBK registration on my CV?

Yes, near the top. In Nigeria COREN registration is required to practise independently and expected for senior roles; in Kenya your EBK class tells the reader what you are eligible for. If you are still in the process, say which stage you have reached.

How long should an electrical engineer CV be?

Two pages for a job application. The projects earn the second page; job descriptions do not.

How many projects should I list?

Three to five recent ones, each with scope, your personal role, the standard or software, and an outcome with a number. Older work can sit in a single line under experience.

Do I list every software package I have touched?

No. Name the ones you could be tested on tomorrow, grouped under systems, standards, software, and testing so a technical reader can scan them.

Is a CV for COREN registration the same as a job CV?

No. A registration submission follows the board's own format and expects a technical report describing your contribution to each project. Keep it as a separate document from the CV you send to employers.
